Where to Eat in Budapest

March 23, 2017
Inside Szimpla Kert Ruin Bar

Whenever I travel, I try to take advantage of the trip to taste the real food of the city or country or whatever it is. Not only I can make my belly satisfied, I also happens to like how the service, and the decor in other cities or country (it might have something to do with the fact that I’m a hospitality student, we judge restaurants and hotels). So here it is, the compilation of the places I go to eat or food guide in Budapest.

Places to eat in Budapest

Street Food Karavan

The first thing I ate once I land in Budapest is in Street Food Karavan. To officially be in Budapest, I have to eat goulash. And I did. It was raining and cold, but the hot goulash with that bread full of carb makes the weather even better. This place is also a beer garden, although I didn’t see or maybe they were not open at the time. There are other type of food in here, not only Hungarian food. See more in this link about the food of Street Food Karavan.

Vintage Garden

If the Street Food Karavan is the first place I ate for dinner, Vintage Garden is the first restaurant I had for breakfast. It is a French, Provence style of restaurant where they offer pretty much the typical menu of a restaurant. Food that’s like eggs, bread, meat, sausage and stuff like that. The only thing I like about this restaurant is the interior that seems like a different atmosphere compared to Budapest. The food is not that bad too, actually it makes the food better with the beautiful interior. I wrote a post solely for Vintage Garden, click here.

Cafe Spinoza

Right after my breakfast at Vintage Garden, I went straight to Cafe Spinoza because it’s not that far. Cafe Spinoza give me the impression of cozy and homey. The greet us very warmly and I think no other cafe welcome us like that. Since I had my breakfast and all I need is coffee, I only got coffee and a slice of cake called dobos torte (must try!). If you get a chance, go here for a while or longer, up to you. Oh, they also have food menu, like heavy food. Click here to see more about Cafe Spinoza.

Gelarto Rosa

No matter what season it is, there’s always a time for gelato. Especially when it’s rose-shaped gelato. Gelarto Rosa is just across the St. Stephen Basilica. The Gelarto Rosa is pretty famous among the area and you can see people are eating gelato in rose shape everywhere. But now you know where it comes from. There are options on how many flavors you want in your cone. Click here to find out more about the area nearby Gelarto Rosa when you traveling in Budapest.

Fakanal Restaurant

Fakanal Restaurant is inside The Great Market Hall, on the second floor. At first, I was just looking for a great pictures and from the second floor, it looks astounding. Nothing much in the Fakanal Restaurant but the decor of the restaurant seems very well-thought. They offer quite a great range of food in their menu. See more in here and you can see also about The Great Market Hall.

Street Cakes

No one can leave Budapest or Hungary without eating chimney cake. If you like the original, plain-looking chimney cake, you can find it anywhere in the touristy area actually. If you like it over-the-top kind of chimney cake, you definitely should go to Street Cakes. You can customized your own chimney cake in Street Cakes. Another best part of Street Cakes is the location, which is in Andrassy Street. See more here to see the more about Street Cakes and Andrassy Street.

New York Cafe

I thought Austria has the best cafe in the world, but boy I was wrong. Not saying that Cafe Central in Vienna is not beautiful, it’s just that New York Cafe bringing the whole standard to the next level. Not only it’s beautiful, photogenic and Instagrammable, it’s delicious too! This place is a must-visit when traveling to Budapest. If you ask for my suggestion on what to order, go here because I made a full post just for this aw-mahzing cafe, or should I say the most beautiful cafe in the world?

Dang Muoi Pho Bistro

If you didn’t know, in December 2015, I went to Hanoi, Vietnam. Since then, I’ve been having this long period of craving Vietnamese food. Of course nothing can compare the real local food in Hanoi, but Dang Muoi Pho in Budapest was the closest thing. I ordered Bun Bo Hue, pancake and spring roll. Let’s just say it was a very, very satisfying meal. Oh, don’t forget to drink some Hungarian Beer, taste quite nice.

Elso Pesti Reteshaz

I have a mixed feeling about this restaurant. It is located among other restaurants in what I think in a touristy street. I heard that Elso Pesti Reteshaz is famous for its strudel. But as always, I was too stupid and too full before I get a bite from the strudel. This is always a funny story for me. My friend and I was very hungry and a menu called “A Dish For Two” seemed very nice for both of us. The waiter said “Good choice ladies” and I didn’t know what was coming. What I got is chicken, duck, pork, beef, rice, potatoes and vegetables for two. Let me emphasize again, TWO FOR EVERYTHING. At first we were shocked, and then excited, and then we know it was too much for us. A dinner turns into an almost three hours long of dinner. In the end, we kinda give it up, but it was a dinner to remember in Budapest. So I think this “A Dish For Two” should be experience by anyone who’s up for a challenge.

A DISH FOR TWO
Grilled Chicken Breast Fillet, Roasted Leg of Duck,
Pork Leg Roast, Beef Tenderloin Fillets, Steamed Jasmine Rice,
Roasted Potatoes, “Letscho”, Grilled Vegetables,
Strudel stuffed with Onion Mashed Potato,
Braised Red Cabbage with Prune

Cafe Gerbeaud

After I went to New York Cafe, it taken me the whole meaning of cafe to the next level. Cafe Gerbeaud is where I had my last breakfast in my Budapest trip. It’s hard to tell you my feeling about this cafe because it is definitely different from New York Cafe, but Cafe Gerbeaud has it own characteristic and I think it’s a really attractive cafe with delicious breakfast meal. Especially that grandeur indoor dining hall that comes with a magnificent chandelier. See more here because I make the full post about Cafe Gerbeaud.

Szimpla Kert Ruin Bar

If you visit Street Food Karavan, Szimpla Kert Ruin Bar is just steps away. This place open in the afternoon-evening. I visited Szimpla Kert twice because I want to see the nightlife in here and take pictures of the ruin bar (cause it’s too damn dark at night). Both of the times, Szimpla Kert is very pretty and very hip.

Lumen Cafe

Lumen Cafe is actually the first cafe I visited during my Budapest trip. It was small but for me it was a really cool cafe. It has this cool indoor green decoration. Everything inside the coffee house is very rustic. It’s also in the Mikszath Kalman Ter, a very cool square. For a very typical local coffee house and if you avoiding tourists, this is the best cafe for you. This Lumen Cafe is for you rustic lover.

Mikszáth Kálmán tér

This is not a restaurant or cafe, but it is surrounded by its. It is actually like an area or a square I don’t really know. But it is a very nice place and seems very local, you know. There wasn’t a lot of tourists or at least it’s not as crowded as the touristy place, which me likey. Another favorite street of mine other than Andrassy Street is the Reviczky Utca (street), nearby this Mikszath Kalman Square. Reviczky Street is full trees and it’s just this amazing small street and the best of all, no tourists (or maybe a little bit).
