Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek Museum

April 29, 2017

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek Museum was on my top list when I was doing research about Copenhagen. Not really a big fan of museum or art in general (but I do have my specific/certain artists that I adore), but when I saw the picture of the winter garden (inside the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek), and I’m a big fan of nature, I know I would love this place. And I did love it very much!

Glyptoteket

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek Museum or Glyptoteket is a private museum by Carlsberg family. Founded by Carl Jacobsen, he was a collector himself. Eventually, he built this museum and put all of his collection and open it for public. This three-floors museum has world-class art collection starting from the ancient art, Greek and Roman Sculpture, French painting and sculpture, Danish painting and sculpture and temporary exhibition. As I mentioned before, not a fanatic art myself but there are big names inside Glyptoteket like Monet, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Degas, Manet, and Rodin. There’s something about walking among these art sculpture and it always creeps me out, like they are judging you or something. So in the end, I didn’t stay long enough to appreciate or learn the art itself. For the entrance price list and guided tour, you can go to their website: http://www.glyptoteket.com/. I’ve gotta say, private museum is the best because they are very carefully taken care of (not saying that all national museums are bad, but in most cases like in Asia, private museums are nicer and it’s kinda obvious).

To be perfectly honest, if it not because of the Winter Garden inside Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, I’m pretty sure I will not visit the museum. But I actually had a great time solo-exploring the museum. The Winter Garden makes Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek more unique and makes it more than just a museum. The weather in Copenhagen when I was there was absolute shit and cold. So this little tropical vibe in the Winter Garden is something to be grateful of. I can just stare and take endless picture of this Winter Garden.

Cafe Glyptoteket

Cafe Glyptoteket is also another thing that I adore from this Glyptoteket Museum. It’s near the Winter Garden and you can enjoy the nature view while you’re having your cup of coffee. I went to Copenhagen from Switzerland in the morning and didn’t have proper breakfast or coffee. When I found out that Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek has a cafe inside, I was more than happy to spend another hour inside. I ordered open sandwich with smoked salmon, fresh cheese, pesto, green salad and cherry tomatoes and cappuccino. It was an meal for a first breakfast in Copenhagen. Breakfast at Glyptoteket. To eat in Cafe Glyptoteket, you have to find a table first and know your table number before ordering because they will ask you your table number in order for them to deliver it to you. Temporary Exhibition by Edgar Degas

During my visit in Copenhagen (around February 2017), there was an temporary exhibition of Edgar Degas. The name might be familiar to you as he was a famous French painter who mainly painted ballerina/dancers as his subject. However, this exhibition focused more on Edgar Degas’s sculpture art. I didn’t know that Edgar Degas was also a sculpturist. Ballerina and dancers were still his main subject though. It was simply very beautiful.

I’m very glad I chose Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek Museum as my first stop in Copenhagen. It’s a great place for solo travelers and travelers who wants to be surrounded by artworks. Not to forget the tiles, stairs, and interiors that are just as beautiful. Only if all the museums in the world is like this, I will visit each of them and actually take my time exploring it. Don’t forget to share this post to anyone who might love this museum!
